Pioneers
In 1986, The Pioneers were employed to work on the seafront at Aberafan with unemployed teenagers. The project created the life sized blue whale, submarine and penguins which are still a feature of the area. The local teenagers were disaffected, unemployed and lacking in motivation, yet they were able to participate for 20 weeks, and through this process one was able to gain sufficient skills and confidence to come off the dole and set himself up as a builder. He is still in gainful employment to this day. During it's 23 year existence The Pioneers facilitated the employment of over 80 people in the arts, all of these were unemployed before joining, and over 60 of them are still in gainful employment either within the arts or within the caring services. The history of this work is to be told in a new book, to be published later this year called "The Pioneers, murals, mosaics, myths and madness".
