Video Biography – Text Version | Leighton Andrews AM
Hello. I'm Leighton Andrews - the Assembly Member for the Rhondda. I was first elected to the Assembly in May 2003 when I won the Rhondda seat back for Labour from Plaid Cymru. Before becoming an Assembly Member I was involved in helping to run a number of charities, I ran a number of small businesses and I was the BBC's Head of Public Affairs in London before coming back to Wales in 1996. Shortly after coming back to Wales I was very involved in the campaign to create the National Assembly, serving as Vice Convener of the 'Yes for Wales' campaign.
As the Rhondda's Assembly Member I've been able to take up a lot of issues of concern to the people of the Rhondda, such as the state of our local schools and doctor's surgeries; the new hospital that's being planned in Llwynypia, the Porth-Rhondda Fach Relief Road, the quality of our trains and of course, I campaigned hard with the Burberry workers to try and keep the factory in Treorchy. After the 2007 election, Rhodri Morgan appointed me as the Deputy Minister with responsibility for housing, but not long after that we had the coalition formed between Labour and Plaid Cymru when I took on the responsibility as Deputy Minister for Regeneration. This has allowed me to focus on the needs of communities across Wales - both their economic, social and cultural needs. Away from the Assembly, my interests include cinema and theatre. I also like supporting local sports teams in the Rhondda and I'm a season ticker holder at Cardiff City Football Club.
